Press Release

Remembering those whose lives were lost and those who gave their lives

Ten years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, we remember the lives of our friends, family and fellow Americans lost that day at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and in Shanksville, PA. We also remember those first responders and workers who died later, and those currently suffering debilitating health conditions, due to exposure to toxins during rescue, recovery and clean up efforts.

These men and woman are true American heroes. It takes something special inside your heart to run into a burning building when everyone else is running out, to dig through a smoldering pile of debris searching for survivors as your boots melt, to be an example of the American spirit showing enemies our unity, determination and that our country will recover and rebuild. These brave men and women answered the call when our country needed them the most, enduring the cloud of dust and other dangers without first counting the cost to their own lives.

When first responders and workers started getting sick and found there was nowhere to turn for the medical care and financial help they needed to support their families, our law firm stood up for these heroes and fought for the care and compensation they deserved.

Many people may be aware that Senior Partner Paul Napoli was appointed the Plaintiff’s Liaison Counsel for the World Trade Center Disaster Litigation. The firm represented more than 10,000 firefighters, police officers and construction workers who developed illnesses caused by exposure to toxic dust during the work in 9/11 rescue, recovery and debris removal efforts at the site. After eight years of compiling and fighting the cases, the firm’s attorneys secured a settlement of $816.45 million for these heroes in November 2010.

What some may not be aware of is that Mr. Napoli and Senior Partner Marc Jay Bern have been instrumental in lobbying state and federal legislators to enact legislation for people who participated in the World Trade Center rescue, recovery and cleanup operations.

  • The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 provides federal dollars for the health care evaluation, monitoring and treatment for exposed first responders and construction workers and reopened the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF).
  • Jimmy Nolan’s Law, an amendment to New York’s General Municipal Law, extended the time for 9/11 workers to file compensation claims for injuries suffered from assisting with the rescue, recovery and clean up at the World Trade Center site.

The proximity of the Firm’s downtown location at 115 Broadway to the World Trade Center prior to the terrorist attacks made the connection with the people and events surrounding 9/11 personal. Many of our attorneys and staff had friends or family who died that day. In the course of representing more than 10,000 first responders and workers over the last ten years, our attorneys and staff have been moved by not only the suffering our clients have endured, but also their incredible fortitude.

It is in remembrance of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack, first responders and workers that we support 9/11 causes. There are many worthy groups recognizing the events and sacrifices of 9/11. We have been fortunate to be able to provide donations and support for the following organizations:

  • National September 11 Memorial & Museum
  • The 9/11 Responders Remember Park (in Suffolk County)
  • The FealGood Foundation
  • The New York City Police Museum
  • The New York World Police and Fire Games

We are also proud to continue advocating for the rights of First Responders while also educating the public about First Responder issues.
